Photos: The Bexley condominium building opens in Tysons

The Bexley Condominium building is the first new construction in Tysons East’s Highlands District.

Another residential option recently opened within walking distance of the McLean Metro station, and this time the units are for sale. The Bexley is a five-story condo building with 140 units priced above $700,000, part of a new planned neighborhood the developer is calling “The Highland District.” Construction on the building completed this fall after the first residents moved in during September.

The Bexley was approved to be up to 8 stories tall in the conceptual application, and planned at one point to be 6 stories, but the height was reduced during the development process, which resulted in the existing 5-story building. The property features a small public park and a private interior courtyard. Parking is underground and accessible through the rear of the building. The Bexley does not have any ground-floor retail, but the zoning allows for it if that were to change at some point in the future (however unlikely).

The Highland District is still in its infancy, as most of the Bexley’s neighbors are currently lowrise industrial and office buildings, but the plan is to eventually replace these with similar urban-style buildings ranging from 5 stories to as tall as 21 stories. The neighborhood is conceptualized as residential, although one future highrise building has the option to be developed as office. It is expected that the neighborhood with its new grid of streets will feature some shops and restaurants.

The 5-story condo building is located at 1761 Old Meadow Road in Tysons.

Right now, the Bexley stands out as a small island in a sea of industrial parks, but its residents are investing in the future of the area on the hopes that this will soon be a well-connected and pleasant place to live. It is already walkable to the McLean Metro and the future shops, restaurants, and hotels at Capital One Center. Work will soon be underway on a pedestrian bridge connecting the Highland District to Tysons Corner Center. And a new trail along Scotts Run will soon be completed that will connect Old Meadow Road to nearby Magarity Road. Once these connections are complete, this neighborhood will have immediate multimodal access to the necessary services to sustain the lifestyle that Tysons planners have envisioned for residents.
