Photos: Abandoned Monarch Tysons construction site

Monarch Tysons started site work in 2019 but has not seen any progress in over a year.

Not every construction project goes as planned. Renaissance Centro, a local real estate developer, has provided an example of this with the Monarch Tysons property. Conceived as a 20-story condo tower near Tysons Galleria, this development broke ground in April 2019 with a planned completion in late 2020. Late 2020 is here, and as can be seen, all construction equipment is gone and nothing has been delivered.

Why did construction stop? It supposedly has nothing to do with financing. In a conversation with a sales representative, it was stated that a change in contractor is responsible. No reasons were given as to why the original contractor did not complete the work, nor was a definite timeline provided for the project to resume. The sales representative insisted that the tower is still moving forward, and county records support the idea with building permits having been granted extensions as recently as November 2020.

Some retaining walls were completed but the property is now abandoned.

The company maintains a sales website, but no official updates have been provided this year. It is likely that if work resumes, Renaissance Centro will publicize the news, and the building will receive additional coverage on Reston Skylines. In the meantime, at least the property will act as a makeshift stormwater reservoir.

  1. Renaissance Centro also has a condo planned for Reston, which I think was approved back in 2018, but I have seen no movement on that either. Wonder what’s going on?
